First thing comes to mind; A TURNCOAT, and by definition, a person who shifts allegiance from one loyalty or ideal to another, betraying or deserting an original cause by switching to the opposing side or party. Turncoat can be translated to as Balimbing (maybe because this fruit has five faces) in tagalog.
Politicians who do so, will strongly deny it and make up their own justifications and excuses. You can call it anything you want, but in the end it’s really Political Survival or just simply jumping on the bandwagon…you don’t want to be left out, would you? Nevertheless, if he’s really thinking for the good of Abrenians, why not…

BAGUIO CITY – Win some, lose some. The incoming administration’s party PDP-Laban has won both support and rejection by lawmakers in the Cordillera.
Newly-elected Abra lawmaker Joseph Sto Nino Bernos who swore into the emerging ruling party before Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez Wednesday said he been long contemplating to join PDP-Laban to show all out support to the administration of presumptive Pres. Rodrigo Duterte. “My joining the administration party can speak well of our intention to bring all the development possible in Abra through a strong link with the administration party,” the Abra congressman who is a former LP member said.
He explained his switching, “as a neophyte congressman, I would not like to be obstructionist but a catalyst for change, specially Abra’s progress.”
Bernos who swore before Alvarez together with former LP leaders, Ilocos Sur. second district rep. Eric Singson, leader of the Northern Luzon Alliance bloc, Ilocos Norte second district rep. Rodolfo Farinas, Pangasinan second district rep. Rosemarie Arenas after a meeting of the NLA congressmen in Quezon City Wednesday said, “we want to galvanize the support for Cong. Alvarez.”
“It was a decision based of both principles and Abrenians interest and welfare,” the neophyte lawmaker said.
But Incoming Kalinga lawmaker, Vice Gov. Jesse Mangaoang said, he will stick it out with the Nacionalista Party (NP), “anyway NP has coalesced with the Pres. Duterte’s party.”
Incoming Baguio rep. Marquez Go also said he will maintain his membership with the NP, while re-elected Mt. Province rep. Maximo Dalog said he will wait for the final decision of the LP leadership on the matter.

Earlier, re-elected Ifugao rep. Teodoro Baguilat Jr. (LP) has called on PDP-Laban to treat his party like an equal and not force its members to switch parties.
PDP-Laban and the Liberal Party were “ideological siblings in the political spectrum” and have had a history of joining forces, especially when Jovito Salonga and Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. ran for national office, Baguilat Jr. said.
“This is why it should not be a condition for LP members to switch parties before they become part of the coalition. This encourages turncoatism, which is a bane of Philippine politics.”
Baguilat, a longtime LP member, said he would remain an LP and vowed he would not join the parade of party members now switching sides, saying, “I am ready to join the minority,” adding that he believes there was a need to have a “vibrant” and “smart” minority in the House of Representatives.
While re-elected Benguet congressman Ronald Cosalan, a brother in law of LP standard bearer Mar Roxas said, he will be staying with the party,. “Once an LP, always an LP,” he firmly said.
Though the Benguet lawmaker, who was the chairman of the powerful and juicy public works committee pledge support to incoming Pres. Duterte. “My vote is to Rep. Bebot Alvarez as House Speaker,” he said. ***Artemio A. Dumlao***
