BANGUED, Abra, (PIA) – – The week-long filing of Certificate of Candidacy (COCs) for the October 28 barangay elections went on peacefully in the province , thanks to the concerted efforts of various sectors to maintain peace and order during the election period.
Atty. Mae Richelle B. Belmes, the provincial election supervisor. reported a total of 579 COCs for the position of Punong Barangay and 4,417 COCs for the position of baragnay kagawad from the 303 barangays of Abra.
No untoward incident was recorded during the filing from October 11-17, which could be attributed to the concerted efforts by the members of the Provincial Joint Peace and Security Control Center composed of the COMELEC, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) represented by the Philippine Army based in the province.
For about a month before the start of filing COCs, Election officers and personnel took turns in explaining over the radio various topics related to the electoral processes which include among others, the provisions of the Election Code governing the observance of the election period, the prohibited acts, and those that are considered contributory factors to the conduct of a safe and fair elections.
To sustain the campaign for a safe and fair elections, peace covenants are now being undertaken in the different barangays throughout the province.
Operation Baklas of illegal campaign materials posted in illegal areas and the anti-epal campaign were carried out all over the province.
Meanwhile, the ballots have already been delivered to the province and these are kept at the Provincial Treasurer’s Office at the Provincial Capitol for safe keeping before final distribution to the municipal treasurers upon instruction from COMELEC.
The Department of Interior and Local Government also helped the COMELEC in the collection of the P10,000.00 counterpart of the barangay government units for the mobilization and honoraria of the Board of Election Tellers who will be serving during the elections. . (JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR, Abra)
