Dolores, Abra. At least three are dead and 2 were wounded in the aftermath of a gun battle in Dolores, Abra last night.

The victims where identified as Former Vice-Mayor of Dolores Dante Guzman,53 years old, his brother, a police officer, PO3 Dindo Guzman, 45 yers old and Jun Cabanawan 48 years old. Also another person believe to have triggered the incident, Christian Cortez, surrendered to the police without any resistance.

According to police investigators, the incident happened at around 11:20PM at a wake while the victims were gambling. Witnesses said that PO3 Guzman and Cortez had some misunderstanding during the game. PO3 Guzman tried to frisk Cortez for gun but Cortez refused and went outside.

PO3 Guzman then followed Cortez and gunfire erupted. Hearing the gun shots, Former Vice Mayor Dante Guzman, rushed outside and witnesses heard another round of gunfire. It is not clear how Cabanawan got involved in the incident. Some say that Cabanawan could have been outside with Cortez when he got hit by the first volley of gunfire.

During the gunfire, another two were wounded. They were identified as Christopher Tordil, 40 years old and Cesar Zapat, 34 years old.

The Guzman brothers and Cabanawan were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Residents of Dolores are speculating that this incident may have some political rivalry involved noting that the Guzman Family are politically active, while Cortez, Cabanawan and the two wounded are all identified with the current Mayor JR Seares.

The Guzmans are brothers of ABRECO Chairman of the Board David Guzman who lost to Mayor Seares during the May 2013 Elections.  (abrenian.com)

  3. This killing atitude has already assimilated to our culture in Abra. How to kick this out is a Big Question Mark (?).

    • people in authority mush have that political will to implement the law regarding firearms, if anybody is allowed to carry his/her firearm outside his residence then that will be a big dilemma to our place. No one is above the law, watch for these unscrupulous politicians and even ordinary people being used by them as bodyguards who carry firearms outside, firearms must be kept inside their house, Mayor Duterte of Davao is a good example worthy to emulate when it comes to the handling of peace and order in Davao. Let us pray to God that violence in our beloved province will be soon addressed by our authority. May God bless our kababayan in Abra.

  4. i feel sad that violence and wild wild west style of living still reign in Dolores. Last night when I heard the news I could not help but asked myself why?

    1) why is it that people roam around with guns tucked in their waists?

    – because they don’t feel secured?
    – because they want to portray themselves as macho?
    – because they feel they have the authority, their boss is in power?
    – because they have total disregard of the law and those of in uniform?
    – because they feel they are the law ?
    – all of the above

    2) why is it that law and justice are but mere words most of the time?

    – because the system is loopholed?
    – because the system is run by corrupt and inutile lawyers and justices?
    – because the system is for the rich and powerful only?
    – because the people are indifferent and does not care at all?
    – because the people are afraid to speak out and tell the truth?

    3) why is it that people don’t trust people in uniform?

    – because they see them as in cahoots with the underworld of crime and violence?
    – because they see them as cowards to run after the criminals?
    – because they see them to be controlled by the rich and powerful a.k.a. the wolves in sheepskins?
    – because they lack proper training and equipment in solving crimes?

    4) why is it that ordinary citizens are so indifferent to public issues esp peace and order?

    – because they don’t trust the justice system?
    – because they don’t believe that men in uniform will be able to protect them?
    – because they believe that no matter what they do and tell, it will be the voice of the rich and powerful which will be heard and justified.
    – because they don’t really care as long as they are not the victims?
    – because it is better to gossip and gamble than to fight for what is right and truth.
    – because they prefer to receive pay offs and keep quiet rather than speak out and get harm

    5) why is it that the so called leaders and big names in politics are usually dragged or connected to crimes?

    – because they feel they need to make an example and show to the people that they too can do it and they should be feared, otherwise they will be called lameducks?
    – because they want to exact vengeance on those who have harmed or threatened them?
    – because they want to hang on and keep sucking to power and IRA?
    – because they want to protect their greedy interests and are willing to do anything and everything to keep their posts?
    – because it is the norm of abra politics? damn if you do and damn if you don’t?

Why oh Why? your answer is as good as mine…
I gave the people of Dolores a chance for a change..i ran but lost…I am not losing hope that someday, somebody will truly lead and govern like a true leader and not through money politics nor violence. There are people out there with good hearts and intentions…but sometimes they lack the courage and strength to fight for what is right…PEACE!

Posted by camlon latta | August 24, 2013, 3:34 pm
    • Sir Neil, total Peace and Prosperity in our beloved province could only be achieved if they scrap any kind of funds for our elected officials. It’s not hard to understand that most (not all) political aspirants are only after the government funds employing all kinds of dirty tactics just to succeed satisfying the devil’s delight.
If our current President was really borne and destined to defeat these devil’s children, he should not only scrap or change the name of this PDAF of our lawmakers on both chambers but also to include funds that intended for our local elected government officials. He could just transfer these fund to the different national government agencies that are tasked with infrastructure, social (etc.) projects where our elected officials just submit their plans/programs for implementation. But they need to supervise them strictly for there’s no such thing as stringent restrictions or guidelines. Some untrusted COA personnel could still find a way to get rid of it or manipulate it like our judicial system that continually mocked or disrespected by some of our corrupt court judges/justices.

If this happens Mr. President, I believe that the thief politicians have no more appetite to run for any elective office where only the honest, efficient, truly sincere, and more than happy to serve God’s people (like you Mr. President) will be left to run or seek votes from the majority of us who are still suffering miserable poverty life . Vote buying and political killings would be then things of the past and total peace and prosperity follows or finally become a reality, no longer an impossible dream, but a Grace falls from heaven, because of your leadership or conviction to follow the dreams and aspirations of your parents for us.

    • You described them all Dr. Neil but why you didn’t ask why the COA who have the enormous power to control or manage government funds which might have an impact to the problems storming your town or the entire province, didn’t or doesn’t have the balls to exercise that power? Were they untouchable that even the President couldn’t ask why? Or, were there no anomalies detected from the justifications of their disbursement/financial report since the granting of IRA/PDAF and other funds for how many decades now, hence, corruption has anything to do at all with these shenanigans as your described above?

      • correction: hence, corruption has nothing to do at all ……..

        Posted by pokka-sulvatana | August 26, 2013, 10:42 am
      • Mam Pokka-Sulvatana, in every aspect of the Philippine Bureaucracy there is corruption. That includes COA and all other agencies. They may deny it as always but it is there, inherent due to poor social and moral values of a few. Sometimes these people do it because they need to feed hungry mouths, “kapit patalim and pikit mata”…can we blame them? for the me, the means do not justify the end. But there are people who wantonly and shamelessly keep and spend people’s money in so many and different forms of cheating disguised as projects. we need P-noys and Robredos at the helm of the government, those who can live simply and honestly amidst a sea of glittering gold.
I have read Sir Bodong’s comment here wherein he said that People in power are exercising the Communist dogma of keeping the poor poorer so that they can control and rule them thru their empty stomachs. Constituents likewise need to change…tayo mismo ang kailangan magbago para mabago natin ang sistema…gawin natin ang dapat at tama. sabi nga “it is only for good men to keep quiet for evil men to triumph”. let our voices be heard para gisingin sila, para konsyensyahin sila, para magbago sila. reinventing Philippine politics is what we really need..how? let us start educating our kids of proper values. for the meantime we stand as nuisance to seemingly deaf leaders. I am saying I am clean nor holy, nobody is holier than anybody but í am simply doing my part for a better province a better Philippines.

  6. Joma, gone are the days where Diego & Gabriela Silang serve w/ pure altruism, indeed they are real heroes. But now all are virtual heroes Darna, Captain Barbel, GI Joe, Hulk Hogan and etc. Everybody, want to enjoy life that is why, they keep mum on any issues that affect longlife. They have ears but they hear nothing, they have eyes but they see nothing. So we have “PEN HEROES” who want to contribute even they are on their twilight, just like Pedro Abreno and many others. Because, I believed that thru writings we can make a change. Look at the “MILLION MARCH” on August 26 they have muster that much to bring about the peoples anger on the pork barrel issue.

of Congressmen, Senators and other government officials.

  7. The 17 yr. old boy ran outside to ask help and Jun Cabanaoan was outside on the street at the time.As he approached the boy, Po3 Guzman ws coming out and saw Jun….”maysa ka met” kunana kanu and started shooting at Jun in the chest. Jun fell on the ground and shoot back at the PO3 Guzman and right in time Ex Vice Guzman was coming out also while the shooting was going on….and that’s when he was also shot by Jun. Jun Cabanaoan is my nephew and the last time I spoke to him was before the oath taking of Mayor JR. I had always reminded him to be careful.. Quiet and humble. he has 3 little kids and a wife. As I understand, he is the family’s most liked and trusted bodyguard.

Cordillera police said one of its own, PO3 Dindo Guzman, 45, assigned at the police station in Bangued, Abra’s capital; his elder brother – former Dolores Vice Mayor Dante Guzman, 53 and Jun Cabanaoan, a bodyguard of incumbent town mayor Roberto Seares, Jr. were killed in an apparent shooting at around 11:20 p.m. at a wake in Sitio Balneg, Barangay Poblacion. Also hurt was businessman Christopher Tordil, 40 and Abra Electric Cooperative employee Cesar Zapata, 34. Cordillera police director Chief Supt. Benjamin Magalong said the former vice mayor had a heated spat with a certain Christian Jay Cortez alias ‘Immong’ while playing a dice game locally called ‘dado’ at the wake. Cortez reportedly hurriedly left the gambling table but the Guzman brothers followed him. Moments later, a gunfight broke out involving the Guzmans and Cabanaoan, Cortez and other male persons. PO3 Guzman, his brother Dante, Tordil and Zapata reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to Abra Provincial Hospital for medical treatment, but the Guzman brothers did not make it. Probers found at least 18 fired cartridges of cal 9mm; 13 fired cartridges of .45 caliber pistol; one slug fragment of unknown caliber; a deformed slug; a live ammunition for .45 caliber; another live ammunition for cal 9mm; two copper jacket fragments and one black holster. Cortez, Magalong said, voluntarily surrendered to Abra police director Sr. Supt. Benjamin Lusad while Jeffrey Borgonia and other suspects are being hunted. Seares said Cabanaoan was the aggressor in the incident. The town executive who said all of those involved in the shooting rampage were reportedly drunk will push town officials to ban gambling during wakes.

How can a person outside be an aggressor if the altercation that started the shootings was inside? “Polis Pitik”, enlighten us. Pardon me, but I think Dumlao doesn’t know what his doing/writing.

The brothers had a promising careers in what they loved most a politician and a cop.why have they traded their lives for another low life character like this jun cabanoan? they were short -changed.If I was that cop , i d diligently performed my sworn duty to serve and protect the public , I would not hesitate to do the same but for the other older brother who would be running for brgy. captn. this coming election should have not dared to venture
outside because it was a death trapped.6 bodyguards of mayor seares was strategically emplaced and that cortez was just a bait to entice the brothers to get out.

as for the PNP , typical for their cinematic antics always arrive late. they were already there in that wake responding a call for police assistance because of that earlier fights between the two . cortez had left already before the arrival of the police but came back later with jun cabanoan’s group. if the police stayed there for a longer time they could have prevented this tragic event from happening.

    • The culture of violence and death has bedevilled Abrenos for so long a time. Quite a number of people have the propensity to meet disagreement with force. It would have been ideal if any disagreement is won through lucid arguments instead of force. But that is simply not the case. We have to change, all of us have to change. And we must start now, right now. We must heal the wounds of division. We must end this culture of violence. It is wrong and it should stop right now. Let us commit ourselves to building a just and gentler society before it is too late. Let us mend our ways. I hope each of us will find the wisdom to recognize the Lord’s gentle reminders to us whenever we have strayed from the straight and narrow path. Because if we don’t, we might get a not so gentle reminder and it would be too late. All of us have shortcomings. No one is perfect. Remember, it takes at least two people to fight. Let us be more patient with each other. Instead of expecting to be served, let us place ourselves in the service of others.

Uray no adu ti babaknang nga Abreno saan da kayat nga itapog ti kuarta da dita Abra. Is it the Geographical location, peace and order or the politician in particular? • You are absolutely right, BODONG. Our people have wallowed in poverty for far too long. Our so-called leaders are intent on keeping them poor so they will not be able to resist the temptation to sell their votes come election time. If you read the home page of Abrenian.com, Mr. Eric Bringas or SysOp cannot have written it more clearly, “It is a medium for those who are at times frustrated by violence and corruption that seems unabated despite numerous changing of the guards”. Oh yes, Bodong, only the faces change. The family names and misgovernance have not. To my mind, it is imperative to break the rule of the different dynasties in our beloved Abra. These dynasties will never retire from politics for as long as the pork barrel and IRA are dispensed by the national government. These dynasties believe they own the position and they will not hesitate to maim or kill to stay in power. The lives of our people have not improved over so many decades. There is a compelling need for those of us who love Abra to educate and inform our people about the evil that comes with the seemingly unending rule of the dynasties. Violence has become part and parcel of daily life because of the presence of so many armed groups. We may have experienced positive change in law enforcement but a lot more has to be done. I don’t believe the crap that there are only two armed groups in the province today. We can only expect so much from the PNP. We, the freedom-loving and peaceful citizens have to do much of the work if we want to see positive change happen. It begins by informing our people in order for them to choose wisely. You, BODONG, are one of the growing number of concerned and thinking individuals who can make a difference. Write on. God bless.

Did I do something that it made you think or feel I demeaned you? well your comments are welcome though. The topic here is the gunbattle in Dolores and not my family.
Look at the head story..Sysop says : “Residents of Dolores are speculating that this incident may have some political rivalry involved noting that the Guzman Family are politically active, while Cortez, Cabanawan and the two wounded are all identified with the current Mayor JR Seares…. “”isu nga haanak agparparbo gapuen ta nakaisurat ket isu met laeng ti kinomentaryok…awatem ngamin nga nalaing..basaem..malaksid no madi ka maka-awawat.
You say my (RIP) Lolo Anteng was always a kontrabida in politics… wow, didn’t you know that without the opposition or kontrabida in politics Democracy is dead? That there will be dictatorship and Authoritarianism? kontrabidas are courageous to speak out and go against the wrongdoings and Baluktot na pamamalakad, pamumuno at paglustay sa kaban ng bayan. sila nga ang tinatawag na madalas ay mga bayani. Your mentality is that of seasoned politician, someone who doesn’t want to see or hear anything against yourself. I don’t wonder why and who you are because it doesn’t matter..you are a coward who speaks out thru an alias, a sign of lack of self confidence. Kontrabidas in politics made sure that bureaucracy is on the right track and democracy is alive….not intimidation, not violence, not money politics… maybe if you want we can discuss issues in a more professional or even more personal way as long as you come out from your nutshell…Did I mention any name of politician? I was speaking in a broad manner, and not specifically pointing to a single individual…but I guess you are guilty that is why you are so defensive and aggressive. You maybe a lapdog too just like the others or maybe the master himself, I just pity you. Change is coming whether you like it or not….PEACE! working together towards a progressive and peaceful community is what I want and advocate…I can work and do my part with anybody for a better place for all of us…sabi ko nga fighting or violence is not my character. I will no longer dignify your comments, you can write whatever you want… people don’t care, they know.
now please get back to the topic in this thread…

But, as I went on reading the threads I just read the views or opinions of dr. Neil banez regarding the causes of killings, social injustices and so on. But, a certain mao came to a response attacking the personality and family of this man. I don’t think this mao doesn’ t understand what neil is saying that he just aggressed talking nonsense topic. We do not like reading here which is out of the topic . If you have the guts mao show yourself to dr,neil banez and talk about your issues and not bringing here your ill feelings. Anyhow, that isthe work of an evil. Attacking one’s family is not acceptable. I am sure you also do not like your family to be attacked. I suggest better stop spreading your hatred and anger here because you are acting unprofessional . So mao be professional coz as I said i did not see anything wrong in this thread that neil banez wrote or commented on it. To you dr. Neil banez, i appreciate the way you handle it in a calm way. I’m also convinced Dr N Banez has the good heart and brain like mr Eduardo, sir Pedro , Badong etc. adu ti maadal nga mangpasayaat ti kinatao. Common sense say that Mao will never, never accept any explanation from Dr. Banez, it will be all wrong even he see it right. But believed me both of them have no peace of mind, coz the latter is thinking, what to write next to hurt Dr. Banez emotionally and dr. banez is thinking the other way round. A bit of advice Dr. Banez, dont stoop to the level of Mao. You are well off, you have better advantage move (on) forward. God Bless,,,,,,,

      • Mao – you can never put a good man down! Dr. Neil is an anesthesiologist and you could never put your grey matter to his level. See, you even used his family name. You are crazy my dear! Neil does not need phone numbers. All he wants is to have. A Critical level of thinking. But, sorry to say that it does not apply to you.

  38. Dear Senior Sysop: I just want to comment the attack of Ringnoster that this dot com is kind of SUCKS!
    1. I think the good lady has forgotten that she has already a considerable number of comments/posts on this dot com that she called Sucks. Is this a blatant display of double standard personality?
    2. If this dot com is sucks so as the viewers and the like including herself especially those really concerned Abrenians who unselfishly contributing their ideas/thoughts, then, were they also considered sucks?; and
    3. What if there’s no Abrenian.com and Pedro Abrenio, how did we clear the name of our very own Supreme Court Associate Justice Bersamin from the attacks against his dignity or reputation?
I think she owes an apology if she didn’t really mean it.

  39. This is a non sense exchange of ideas. I’m sorry to tell this for Mr. Pedro Abrenio & DR. Neil Banez but these people like Mao, Gorio, Meow, Palakupak, Tukak, Blackie and many other names is one and the same person. What a waste of time exchanging words to these kind of Abrenios. Pedro Abrenio & Dr. Neil, I commended your opinion and clarity of your thoughts. I can’t resist not comment here. Ang angaw ti ammo da daguitoy nga personalidad.

    • Kalaki mong tao, very critical and judgmental ka pa.
What’s the use of having your true name if you have nothing to share with? Look at the majority bogus here headed by Genti and Pedro Abreno? They are the most humble person to accept credit if their comment is more than enough to make your day, but they are the most coward to run and hide if the viewers got more than enough causing their blood pressure to rise…..he…he..
So which you prefer better now? Are you just contented with those with real names (they are all good or unselfish in sharing their thoughts to the public without any hidden personal interest, you know?) and we bogus will just evaporate? Or, you still prefer both, because you believe likewise that ideas/opinions are still better or more important than the name, whether they’re bogus or not?

      • Sammo dawan – to whom you are referring your message pls? Thank you.

        • To Hercules…..

Posted by sammo dawan jr. | August 30, 2013, 4:15 pm
        • It’s my first time reading Abrenian.com re news in Abra Sammo Dawan. As I scrolled down the key board to read your exchanging of ideas all I saw are trash of your thoughts and ideas. The two people and few other more that I mentioned are good thinking people and open to all ideas of others. I want to know what are happening in our Province and not this “kanto: ideas that you have. You check yourself and you are many that are using different names but one and the same person in this web site.

          Posted by hercules | September 1, 2013, 7:51 pm
  40. Then share with us your good thoughts or ideas instead of criticizing us. Maybe you are the one we had been waiting for to bring effective ideas that might change the ugly face of our province. Thanks for your constructive criticism, though. Keep in touch…!!
