BANGUED, Abra, July 13 (PIA) — The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) of Luba chaired by Mayor Marcelo Biscarra,Sr. had released funds for the procurement of medicines and mosquito-repellent lotion for distribution to schoolchildren following the dengue outbreak in this upland town.

Municipal treasurer Armand Dacquel said the MDRRMC released P36,771.50 from the LGU’s calamity funds to procure medicines for those affected by dengue and the lotion distributed to schoolchildren as a preventive measure.

Fogging was also conducted in the schools, house, and the church in Barangay Poblacion.

Virginia Lalin, the provincial coordinator for the Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (PIDSR) program, reported that dengue outbreak was declared in the municipality of Luba last July 1 after recording 59 cases of dengue infestation in clustered areas particularly in Poblacion and its sitios.

The cases in Luba alone constitute more than 22 percent of the total of 262 cases in the entire province for the period covering January 1 – July 10 a high increase compared to the 174 recorded cases in the entire province and one recorded dengue case in Luba last year.

In an interview with Leila Bernal, the Disease Surveillance Officer of the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU), she said they had already reactivated all the Municipal Epidemiology Surveillance Units (MESUs) especially the towns that have been considered hard-hit by the dengue this year. These are the municipalities of Luba (59), Bucay (48) with one(1) death, Villaviciosa (26), Manabo (10) and Tayum (15).

Meanwhile, the PESU had intensified its anti-dengue campaign in all the local communities particularly the revitalization of the 4 p.m. habit where people regularly check and clean the environment particularly the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. (JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR,Abra)
