Pinoy organization in UK raises funds for Abra kids

LONDON — Pinoy performers from across the United Kingdom combined forces in London recently for a fundraising event to help the children of Abra, Philippines.

Bands, solo singers, musicians and comedians entertained Filipinos who packed a bar in the area of Kings Cross, London, on June 22.

The One Love Abra charity concert was organised by the UK branch of organization the European Network of Filipino Diaspora (ENFiD).

The event was inspired by Jomel Anthony Gutierrez, a former ABS-CBN Europe correspondent, who now works as a Social Welfare and Development Officer for the DSWD in the Philippines.

Gutierrez accompanied DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Juliano-Soliman last April on a visit to the municipality of Tineg, which is among the top three poorest communities in the Philippines.

Home to some 4,500 people, Tineg became a municipality in 1958, but still has no electricity or access to proper sanitation and clean water.

While viewing school classrooms and daycare centers, Gutierrez was shocked by the poverty and dire conditions faced by children.

He reported rubble floors, ripped educational posters, no ceilings, no books or notebooks, no pens, no bags to carry their things in, and only one old blackboard.

“They just lacked so many basic things. So the question was can we do something about this and of course we said yes,” explained ENFiD European and UK Chair Gene Alcantara.

“Today, we have about 30 performers, 20 groups and individuals, and they’re all giving us their free music, free talents. They wanted to perform and show that they care about the Filipino children in the Philippines.

“For me it’s not just about the charity per se, but also the fact that they are UK based Filipinos thinking about the motherland back home,” Alcantara said.

British Pinoy electro-pop band Ooberfuse was one of the first acts to open the evening.

“Music is an amazing vehicle to amplify voices that can’t ordinarily be heard. We’ve been hearing about the situation over there and feeling the pain that people are going through,” said songwriter Hal St John.

“It’s a way of using music to show that we stand united with the people in Abra and we’re doing our little bit to help the situation as well,” commented lead-singer Cherrie Anderson.

“I just think it’s great. It’s largely a Filipino thing but I think it’s not only Filipinos around. You’ve got people from all walks of life chipping in. At the most part it’s a human thing,” added guitarist Nico Cox.

For the band Anino, performing at the event was a way of spreading awareness and giving something back to the community.

“There are problems in Philippines that seldom people here in London don’t really know and they should know,” Clark Racho said.

“Yung blessing natanggap natin, sa maliit na paraan sa pagbibigay ng talento natin sa pagtugtog, maka-earn kami konting fund para masuportahan ang mga nangangailangan,” Ordep Resplandor said.

“As a band it’s a win-win situation. We play our original songs and at the same time we help,” commented Darwin Ardales.

Stand-up comedian Jon Jie Mirabona, also known as Mudak, donned a giant afro wig for his act. He said: “It’s really nice because you give them [the kids] the opportunity to reach their goal in the future.”

Transgender solo singer Ruvic Rea traveled 210 miles from York to London just to support the fundraiser. Rea added: “I believe that sharing my talent, sharing my effort, is the only thing that we can contribute for this project. This is a very, very important event.”

Headlining the showpiece was 2013 Britain’s Got Talent finalist Arisxandra ‘Xaxa’ Libantino, who performed an English and Tagalog song.

“It’s really important for them to have the money. I just wanted to sing in front of people so I could raise money to go back to the Philippines,” the 11-year-old told ABS-CBN Europe.

“It really means so much to them and I really want to do something like this,” Xaxa said.

ENFiD-UK says it has raised £1,400 for the children of Tineg, which is approximately P92,000. Rather than sending the money directly, it will be used to purchase materials and equipment that will then be delivered by an ENFiD representative.

The One Love Abra concert was ENFiD-UK’s first project since the group’s inauguration last year.

        • I doff my hat off to you, JOMS. You are truly one of a kind. It is not often that a person will do something even with the knowledge that he will not get anything in return. You are indeed “genuine charity” personified. You are a rarity in this broken world that is Abra. May your tribe increase. GOD BLESS.

      • For Tineg to be among the three poorest communities in the country is both unfortunate and sad. This is a classic case of misgovernance and dishonesty in public service. This mirrors the true state of governance in all the 27 municipalities in Abra and the lack of leadership of Gov. Takit. He cannot wash his hands off this mess because Tineg is very much a part of Abra. The only decent and honorable thing left for the leaders of Tineg and the province of Abra is to resign. When was the last time Gov. Takit visited Tineg? If he did, was he wearing blinders? The COA auditor assigned to the municipality of Tineg should be investigated too. Like all politicians, these auditors of the COA never had it so good. These are the people assigned to prevent the plunder of public funds and yet they take their share of the loot. Shameless, shameless. Correct me if I was misinformed that Tineg has 3 million pesos a month in the form of IRA. If that is true, you can just imagine the magnitude of plunder perpetrated by its officials. No ceiling, dilapidated floors, no books, no pens. no water supply, no electricity, no nothing. Filipinos in the UK have to raise 92,000 pesos to provide some of the things needed by the pupils in Tineg. I have said time and again that stealing taxpayer’s money is evil. Taxpayer’s money is food on the table of the hungry; it is the medicine that saves the lives of the sick; and it is the book in the hands of our students whose only ticket out of poverty is a good education. Steal it and you virtually kill your own people. It is our sad lot as a people to be saddled by crooks in barongs pretending to be our leaders. This time they have crossed the line. The rot is there for the world to see. Do our public officials have no shame?

        • Abrenian.com is a free marketplace of comments and observations. Everyone is free to post his comment or observation. I may not agree with some of the comments but I will always defend the right of the writer to post it. The last time I checked, we are still living in a democracy where citizens have the right to seek redress of their grievances. I cannot for the life of me see how people who criticize government officials be responsible for the bad image of the province. It is the government officials who are committing graft, remember? The people are just pointing out the shenanigans and atrocities being committed by these government officials. They have every right to do so because they are paying the salaries of these government officials through the taxes that they pay. By the way, the BIR and the municipal treasurers use all imaginative ways to exact more and more taxes each year from businessmen but they do not exercise the same vigor in running after those who steal the taxes that have already been collected. Now, tell me, is that fair? Government officials should not be too onion-skinned because criticism is part of the territory. Besides, wounds sustained in public service can be easily assuaged by the soothing balm of a clear conscience. That is if indeed they are innocent and unfairly criticized. If they cannot stand the heat, they should get out of the kitchen. If a government official steals public funds intended for the welfare of his constituents, would he have us call him a saint? A person who steals is a thief, there is no nice word for it. If a governor sits on his butt all day acting like the proverbial monkey, are the citizens not within their rights to take him to task for it? The right to education is one of the most basic rights. Education is imperative if a government wishes to eradicate poverty. No wonder most of the government officials in our province take education for granted. They want to keep our people mired in poverty so they will be perpetually vulnerable to vote-buying during elections. All of our government officials took their oath. Read their oath and you’ll find out that they violated everything in that oath except their name. Now they and their sycophants and boot-lickers resent it when they are criticized. The day will come when God will purge the world of evil. Until then it is up to you to decide on whose side you are on.

        • Sir Pedro, if only these politician’s loved ones especially their loving teenage children and spouses could salivate of every word that you are trying to enlighten us, Abra would be never the same again three years from now. It’s a big IF but nothing is impossible with the prayers of Tagamasid that some will and influence or soften the hardened hearts of these thieves and criminals to amend their evil ways. The day of reckoning is coming, it’s just around the corner, they are already in our backyards and I don’t want to think that this is the CURSE we have been fearing of because of the wickedness of our politicians. I hope is not yet too late Sir….

    • GERONIMO, it is never too late. Let us keep the faith. Let us never lose hope. Remember, there is no medicine like hope. It is the only thing that will keep us alive. Let us remain vigilant. Let us remain steadfast. Now more than ever, our people need to know that there are fellow Abrenos who care. Now more than ever, we must make our people feel that we will never stop fighting for a better life for them in our own small way. Let us praise and support our government officials when they are right but we must take them to task when they fail to serve us and take advantage of us.

  11. This is a very touching news to know na may mga taong taos pusong tumutulong sa atin kahit d nila tau kaano ano, sila ang may mga malasakit sa mga batang may pangarap sa buhay… Maraming salamat po sa inyo ENFID UK, sa tulong ni sir Jomel Anthony Guttierez, pagpalain po sana kayo ng Diyos at marami pa kayong matutulongan thru your talents and efforts as well… Ngunit masakit at nakakahiyang malaman na ang Municipality of Tineg na pumapangalawa sa Bangued na may pinakamalaking IRA sa buong probinsya ng Abra ay siyang pangatlo sa THE MOST POOREST COMMUNITY OF THE PHILIPPINES. Saan kaya nila dinadala/ginagastos ang pera ng bayan? dagok ito sa mga politiko especially the Mayor of Tineg. Dapat magkaroon ng masinsinan na auditing and bayan kung saan napupunta ang pondo or the so called IRA upang malaman natin lahat kung saan ginagastos ang kaban ng bayan. Sa pontong ito, kailangan din ng action ng ating Governor regarding this matter.pati yong mga provincial auditor assigned to the municipality please don’t tolerate kung may mga nangyayaring kababalaghan na ginagawa ng mga municipal officials including the treasurer, accountant, engineer and budget officer. These people works together with regards to money matters therefore they should answer to this issue. To the Mayors of the 27 Municipality of Abra, esp.

  12. First of all I would like to say thank you to this ENFID-UK for their kind hearted support to us abrenians esp. the children of Tineg. Its good you have witnessed how these children in Tineg survived with nothing to bring to school, very uncomfortable while learning due to lack of facilities, classrooms are not conducive for learning. Its good if they have taken their breakfast before going to school and have lunch prepared when they get home after school.could you just imagine how you survive with this kind of life? If you Municipal officials put your feet on the shoes of these children how would you feel? dahil kayong mga municipal officials ng Tineg ay nakatira dito sa Bangued, dindi ninyo nararanasan ang hirap ng inyong mga kababayan kaya nag eenjoy lng kayo, mga anak ninyo pumapasok sa mga maaayos na eskwelahan pero your constituents are starving, suffering poverty and from the hardship of being forgotten by their leaders whom they believed could helped them if they vote for them. Now election has been over, those officials who have just taken their oath of office, I hope you will not forget what you have promised. I hope you have chosen the best leader during the last May 11 Election?!?

  13. It’s really a showcase of genuine love of concern, thIS commendable outreached ENFID UK project for Tineg! We salute and give thanks to all members!

Agpayso nga Tineg ti kadakkelan ti IRA, no less than 50 millions per yr! Nakaskasdaaw nga maysa nga karigatan ti Pilipinas, Pappanan ngata dayta nga kuarta? Apo governor baka adda maaramidam ti pannakausar daytoy kas maysa nga ama ti probinsya ta saan met nga ammo ni mayor ti rumbeng nga aramidenna. You have 3 years more to prove what you have been claiming “to serve and not to be served”. These is the same words our Lord Jesus used when He served us in 4 years out of His short 33 years with us on earth. In that 4 years He showed genuine Love and concern to the all, especially the needy. He showed humility, He healed, He helped the poor, He suffered the consequences our sins not His. He died for His People! He had nothing in this world. I think He didn’t even a bahay kubo! He had only SO much Love for His people. THAT’s the true essence of TO SERVE AND NOT TO BE SERVED. You have long 3 yrs to prove to your words to be worthy of our love and respect, otherwise you will leave a legacy like the common- hyphocit, worthless.

  14. Sana lang po di na nila ibigay na cash ang tulong na yan at sana they will give it directly to the recipients for sure na matanggap nila dahil kapag dadaan yan sa kamay ng mga politiko baka sa mga alipores lang nila mapupunta at hindi sa mga desired recipients.

  15. Due to Lavander or Mannalon persistent previous comments or silent prayers for years now regarding the sad plight of this town, someone with kind heart, brought it to the attention of Madam Corazon Dinky Soliman and Jomel Anthony Guttierez. God knows and feels how this individual loves his birthplace in particular and the whole province in general. You could sense it for he won’t stop mentioning his concerns about his humble town even up to the point of sacrificing his hard earned money to construct affordable drinking water source for his beloved constituents. I have also a silent prayer for all the towns because Tineg is not the only victim of unending poverty, that the flood gate of spiritual transformation will be opened and drown the hardened hearts of the idolaters/unbelievers, lukewarm pretending hypocrite believers, and lost souls or those totally innocent with the Word of God. If our priests/preachers/pastors will succeed in circumcising the hardened hearts of even just 50% of the total population of the province and 5% of our government thieves, I believe in my heart that the Creator of heaven and earth, will not only pour blessings to the citizens of Tineg but to the province as a whole. The truth is, I partly blame our present predicament to these soldiers of Christ because of their failure or cowardliness to put the Word of God in the mouth and heart of our scary armed and dangerous grand-grand-grand parents or parents of our current thief politicians. But thanks to the power of Information Technology (thru the tireless effort of Sysop driven by his unconditional love or concern to our province) that more more innocent Abrenian citizens especially in the far-flung areas are now beginning to grasp that there’s indeed only one God that could hear, feel, see, and judge anything and everything. So, if these soldiers of Christ could not convert or even just soften your heart daylight thief politicians, wait……. your judgment is coming without any sign like a thief in the middle of the night. Like they say: “you can run but you cannot hide.” Your conscience will hunt and haunt you, wherever you go, wherever you are………….be it in prison or hell, you can not escape your own conscience. Sorry……..

If you don’t pity yourself, will you please pity your heir/s at least?
