Abra gets back electricity after negotiations with power supplier

Did the whole management of ABRECO actually resigned?

By Vincent Cabreza
Inquirer Northern Luzon

January 25th, 2013  BAGUIO CITY, Philippines—Abra is getting back its power, hours after a blackout on Thursday, which residents had expected to last far longer than usual.

The Aboitiz Power Renewables Inc. (APRI) terminated its supply contract with the Abra Electric Cooperative (Abreco) because of debts that date back to the start of their contract in January 2012.

The whole province lost power at 12:04 p.m., but Pura Sumangil, a member of the Abra provincial crisis committee, said she was informed of a scheduled power restoration, which would have taken place in parts of the province at 5:17 p.m., due to new arrangements orchestrated by the provincial government.

Chief Supt. Benjamin Magalong, Cordillera police director, said Abra Gov. Eustaquio Bersamin convinced most of Abreco’s officials to resign after he convened a crisis management committee session. The resignations paved the way for new management to renegotiate the supply deal with APRI, which operates the Tiwi-Makban geothermal power plants in Batangas, Laguna and Albay. He said APRI was persuaded to restore power while scheduling fresh talks with a new Abreco team.

The Department of Energy also intervened, at the behest of the Abra government, and is studying the legal avenues available for the National Electrification Administration to assume control over Abreco, Magalong said. Abreco is registered with the Cooperatives Development Authority (CDA), unlike most rural electric cooperatives.

  2. This is such a tragedy. I applaud the resignation of all these people that orchestrated this tragedy but that’s not enough they should also pay all back the money they embezzled.

  4. The PNP/AFP civilian clerical personnel should occupy Abreco with the supervision of few NEA personnel on temporary basis or after the election period or until the new management takes effect in order to ensure its safe and efficient operation. Foot police/soldiers will be mobilized for field services with the assistance of their former meter readers and technicians as the need arises. If posssible, let NEA handles the hiring criteria/procedures in consonance with Civil Service guidelines/requirements. No more short cuts or “palakasan” system…PLEASE..!

    • This is foul! You can not use our town as your disguised name because you are not the only one affected neither all of us have the same line of thinking. Please don’t create a general impression towards Langidenians in fairness to those who are trying to make a good impression for their birthplace. Use your very own alias and not somebody’s name for we have differing opinions or mindsets. Other professionals in Langiden will be insulted and I urge you to be professional also and have a little bit of shame, will you?

        • I’ll give up. It’s really hard to convince a person devoid of UNDERSTANDING and self-respect. They are just clamoring for attention driven by pure arrogance. Anyway, I need to forgive you brother for the sake of our peace-loving Langidenians including your own loved ones or close relatives that may be so proud of you someday.

  15. Good job gov. Takit! Abrco management is really run by unfit gen. Manager, BOD, and numerous unnecessary heads, supervisors, area managers.

Members of the boards are all BATA of mayors who supported them actively during ABReCo board elections against professionals and deserving candidates. So the problem of power is a product of dirty politics. These officials who receive consumers money are also Bata of mayors, mayors
who are using our taxes in vices, houses, cars,n extra marital activities. I doubt if there are any exception of these kind of greed and evils.

There is wisdom in the decision of the Dept of Energy tru Nat. Power administration to have Abreco under its control and management. We hope that move will work while we do our part not be influenced by these politicians in the future BOD elections. Let this power problem be wake up call for all consumers and voters this coming May election.

    • The governor also deserves a bodyguard that would truly watches his back anytime and everywhere he at. Said bodyguard should also think twice before doing anything that would affect the governor’s reputation whatever he does during his break-time or day-off. They should be mentally evaluated first before hiring to ensure their worth or their dedication to protect their master at all costs including of sacrificing their personal safety and pride. If they found mentally unfit, send them to the hospital at once for treatment before it get worse. You need a cool, loyal, and always ready to protect not to destroy you. Send him to Las Vegas for vacationing or give him any disciplinary action/s that hopefully works.
