It’s a one-on-one battle, mano-a-mano, all gloves are off fight for the Governorship of Abra. Former Allies , who ended the reigns of the the Valeras in 2007 are battling it out.
Eustaquio “Takit” Bersamin, the incumbent, gunning for his 3rd term. Bersamin won his first election in 2007 because of sympathy vote. He has had good record in his first term as the governor, spending his time fixing the damaged done by an almost 20 year rule of then Vicsyd Valera and his family. His second term is going without controversies. He is facing plunder charges file by his opponent’s son Jendricks Luna, on his second term of office. It has been alleged that he lets his immediate family take control of the day to day affairs in the Provincial Office.
Cecilia Seares Luna is a former Congresswoman. She was at the right place at the right time in 2007 when the Valera Dynasty is about to crumble. Fought hand in hand with the Bersamins to unseat Vicsyd and Ching Valera. She failed to get re-elected in 2010 against the current Congresswoman Joy Valera but filed an election protest. Luna is also accused of plunder (together with her son Jendricks) by her former ally Bernardin Joson.
Let’s not forget Joel “Kit” Bicera Bersamina an unknown and many thought he’s a nuisance candidate to muddle votes for Bersamin. If this was a ploy by the other parties, you can expect legal battles to take him out of the list of candidate. If COMELEC allows him to run, it could be a headache for Bersamin,
Bersamin clearly has the advantage as he’s the incumbent. Incumbents in Philippine political arena always had the government resources as its personal war chest. Luna is no stranger in politics and far from being ignored or underestimated.
Many thought it’s going to be another slamdunk re-election of Bersamin but with Luna as his opponent, he’s in for a big fight if not the biggest fight of his political career.
